Stephen Ministry is a lay caregiving ministry that supplements pastoral care. It offers a proven and effective way to organize, equip, and supervise a team of congregation members – called Stephen Ministers – to provide high-quality, one-to-one, Christ-centered care to people in the congregation and the community experiencing life difficulties.
Since the development of Stephen Ministries, founded in St. Louis in 1975, more than 13,000 congregations have enrolled in the Christian education organization. From those participating congregations, over 75,000 pastors and lay leaders have been equipped as Stephen Leaders and more than 600,000 individuals have received Stephen Minister training. The result: more than 1.5 million people have had a Stephen Minister providing one-to-one spiritual and emotional support in their time of need.
Stephen Ministers are fellow parishioners who have undergone over 50 hours of training and will “walk alongside you” during your journey through the unfamiliar. They will listen to you and pray with you and for you. They will provide comfort and support for as long as you need it.
Stephen Leaders
Ruth Hill, Mary Vivian White, Jody Mech, Jay Londre'"They say a picture is worth 1000 words. I am trying to put a face on an invaluable outreach at Saint Francis of Assisi called Stephen Ministry. As a priest, I frequently care for people in times of crisis. However, it’s impossible for me to provide all the follow-up care that people need. That is where the Stephen Ministers are so valuable. They walk with hurting individuals for as long as needed…listening, caring, praying and being Christ’s loving presence."

Stephen Leaders are lay leaders trained to provide ongoing leadership for their congregation’s Stephen Ministry. They are equipped for this key role through the Stephen Leader Training Course offered by Stephen Ministries St. Louis.

Stephen Ministers are parishioners trained to provide one-to-one care to those experiencing a difficult time in life, such as grief, divorce, job loss, chronic or terminal illness, or relocation. They come from all walks of life, but they all share a passion for bringing Christ’s love and care to people during a time of need.
Stephen Ministry: The Many Needs of Care |
Care receivers are individuals in the parish or community who are going through a crisis or life difficulty. Potential care receivers first meet with a Stephen Leader, who assesses their needs for care and matches them with a Stephen Minister. The caring relationship lasts for as long as the need persists.
